Is the course free?

No, you must pay the course fee before your account is activated.

I do not use PayPal. Are there other means to pay the course fee?

If you have a credit card, PayPal permits one-time payments without creating an account. Otherwise, a cheque or an e‑transfer is possible. Contact RAQI (Fédération des clubs radioamateurs du Québec) for details.

Does this course grant me an Amateur Radio Operator Certificate?

No, you will need to seek a local accredited examiner to schedule an official examination.

How do I arrange an official certification examination?

The Department offers a search tool to find an accredited examiner (see the Amateur Radio Operator Certificate Services (new tab or window) page). You will need to contact one for an examination.

What is the examination fee?

Accredited examiners are allowed to recover their costs. Typically, the fee will be $20.

Is it possible to practise before my official examination?

Absolutely, the Question Bank is public and exam simulators exist (see the Exam Generator (new tab or window) link ).

When does the course start?

There is no start date nor end date: you make your way through the material (mainly web pages) at your own pace.

Is there a time limit?

There is no time limit: you take as long as you need.

How long is the study time?

Impossible to say: it depends on your aptitude for mastering the subject matter. Typically, people put in 50 to 100 hours; some never succeed.

Am I too young or too old?

Impossible to say: it depends on your aptitude for technical matters and abstract concepts.

Is it difficult?

Somewhat, it is demanding. It is not meant for everybody. Over 600 concepts about electronics, radio and regulations need to be covered. See the course outline.

Do you guarantee my success?

No, our material covers all you need but the final result depends on you.

Do I need to purchase a training manual?

No, our online material is complete. That being said, you are free to seek references elsewhere.

Is your course available as a single manual?

No, it would be too easy to make unauthorized copies.

What support is available?

The instructor answers questions submitted by email.

Can I use a tablet rather than a desktop computer?

I have a sailboat with a radio on it. Do I need an Amateur Radio Operator Certificate?

Yes, if you intend to use frequencies allocated to the amateur radio service. No, if you only use frequencies allocated to the maritime service. Many boaters appreciate the camaraderie of amateur radio operators.

I live outside Canada. Can the training be useful?

Probably not. Every country determines what candidates need to know. There are obviously differences between countries: for example, the topics covered, the terminology (vocabulary) and, particularly, the regulations.
